Blood-soaked bodies of a mother and her seven-year-old son were recovered from their home in South 24 Parganas on Sunday morning The deceased have been identified as Manowara Bibi (40) and her son Anwar Halder. The incident took place in the Jamalpur area under Chandipur Gram Panchayat in the Dholahat police station area.
According to police sources, there had been a long-standing domestic dispute between Manowara and her husband, Firoz Halder, who is now absconding and suspected to be behind the double murder.
Locals said the incident came to light when neighbors noticed Manowara’s house door open and received no response to their calls. Upon entering, they found the floor soaked in blood and the two victims lying motionless. Police from Dholahat police station soon reached the spot, recovered the bodies and sent them to the Kakdwip police morgue for autopsy.
A local resident, Karimuddin Haldar, said, “We found Manowara and her son dead inside their house. She was a hardworking woman who earned her living on her own. We strongly suspect her husband’s involvement in the murder. He has been missing since the incident.”
Aftauddin Laskar, a local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader, described the incident as “tragic and heartbreaking.” He added, “We have requested the police to conduct a thorough investigation. The party stands with the victim’s family and we are confident the culprit will be caught soon.”
Superintendent of Police (Sundarbans Police District) Koteshwar Rao said, “The victim woman’s husband has been absconding since the incident and a search operation is underway. Several members of the in-laws’ family have been detained for questioning. We are confident of solving the case soon.”
The gruesome murder has sparked tension in the locality. Police have been deployed in the area to maintain peace and prevent any unrest as investigations continue.
