The emergence of human remains has led to various theories— some believe the skeleton could be decades old, while others suspect a possible link to an undiscovered criminal incident.

A routine construction job turned into a chilling discovery on Sunday when workers unearthed a human skull and bones while digging the foundation for a new house, said police. The incident, which occurred near the Swamiji Sangha Club beside Kalyangarh market under Ashoknagar police station in North 24 Parganas district, has shocked the local community and triggered speculations.

According to workers at the site, the digging work abruptly stopped after a spade struck a hard surface. As they cleared the soil, a human skull emerged.

“Further excavation revealed additional bones, forming a partial human skeleton. Word spread quickly, drawing a large crowd of curious and alarmed residents. Locals said that although the area is densely populated, no such discovery has ever been reported before,” said a police officer.

Police from Ashoknagar station reached the scene promptly after being informed. Officer-in-charge Chintamani Naskar, along with other officials, inspected the site. The area was cordoned off, and a police picket was set up to prevent public interference.

Initial police assessment suggests that the bones appear to be quite old. However, the circumstances under which the skeleton ended up buried there — or the identity of the deceased — remain unknown.

The police said that the recovered skull and bones were sent for forensic examination. “Experts will determine the approximate age of the remains, the gender of the individual, and whether there are signs of foul play. A clearer picture will emerge once the forensic report is available,” said another police officer.
