Farmers in the state are struggling for DAP fertilisers, used for sowing rabi crops, mainly wheat and mustard.

The government has received complaints from the farmers about the shortage of fertiliser and the mismanagement in distribution, the authorities seek help from the police in distribution of DAP in Jind and Bhiwani districts.

However, the agriculture department officials said that there had been no shortage and the supply of DAP was being ensured.

According to a report, mismanagement between the local administration and the companies providing the fertiliser has resulted in shortages.

Officials from the department said that DAP consumption in Haryana was 2,10,380 metric tonnes (MT) from October to December last year. Therefore, it was estimated that the same amount will be utilised in the current season.

The data report that 1, 19, 470 MT of DAP was sold to farmers in October 2023. And, 1,15,197MT of DAP was issued to them the following month in November 2023.

The difference in total amount issued from 2023 and 2024 is 4,273MT. The officials further said that this much small amount could not be termed as a shortage in the supply to farmers.

The data further showed the availability of 23,655MT of DAP in the stock. The officials further said that the figures keep on changing as the supply of fertilisers continues to come along with the sale in the district.

Meanwhile, the farmers indicate black market of DAP as private players had been offering a bag of fertiliser at a premium price of Rs 500 to Rs 600.

Amit Kumar, a farmer, resident of Kirtan village, informed that he bought 10 bags of DAP at a rate of Rs 1,900 per bag.

“I was in desperate need of DAP for sowing mustard but could not get the fertiliser. Thus I decided to purchase it in the open market at a premium rate,” he said.

The government rate of per bag of DAP is fixed at Rs 1,350.

Even today, farmers staged protests in Loharu town of Bhiwani district alleging a short supply of DAP. The farmers said there was no message from officials as they had been standing in a queue outside the shop since morning.
