Four people were killed and nine others, including the driver, were injured after a Bolero Camper carrying mourners fell into a nearly 50-metre-deep gorge near Gattlog in Sirmaur’s Sangrah area. The accident took place around 1 am on Tuesday night. Four seriously injured people were referred to Medical College, Nahan.
According to police, the vehicle, bearing registration number HP 79-4595, had been hired to carry the body of Jagdish Sharma, a resident of Arlu village. Sharma had died of a heart attack at Sangrah hospital. His family members and villagers were taking his body to Arlu for the last rites.
Police said Sunil Sharma of Chinad village had taken his uncle Jagdish Sharma to Sangrah hospital on August 11 after he suffered a heart attack. After doctors declared him dead, the family hired the Bolero Camper to transport the body to Arlu. Kapil Dev of Dungi village was driving the vehicle.
Several relatives and villagers joined the group near Chinad as they travelled to attend the funeral. While the vehicle was heading towards Gattlog, the driver reportedly lost control. The vehicle then skidded off the road and plunged around 50 metres down the slope.
Four people died at the spot. The deceased were identified as Rajendra, 37, and Des Raj, 23, both from Arlu village, and Rikhi Ram, 58, and Ram Gopal, 62, both from Chinad village.
The injured were identified as Brij Mohan, 62, Kripa Ram, 61, Devendra Singh, 44, Sunil Sharma, 21, Ram Swaroop, 44, Jai Prakash, 45, Sandeep, 21, Kamalendra, 48, and driver Kapil Dev, 39.
Police said Kamalendra, Sandeep, Ram Swaroop and Kapil Dev suffered serious injuries. They were first treated at Sangrah hospital and later shifted to Medical College, Nahan. The other injured persons are receiving treatment at Sangrah.
Post-mortem examinations of the four deceased are being carried out at CHC Sangrah. Police have started an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.
