B S Ojha, the former Chief Secretary of Haryana and a veteran 1959-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, passed away in Chandigarh on Monday.
Ojha was a profoundly influential figure among the north Indian administrative community. Both of Ojha’s sons-in-law went on to serve as Chief Secretaries for Punjab and Haryana, respectively. Ojha’s cremation took place in Chandigarh on Tuesday.
His public service career spans over three decades, characterised by principled leadership and a steady, methodical administrative style. Ojha held the position of Chief Secretary of Haryana starting on 24 June 1991, during a politically transitional period in the state.
Ojha was widely known for focusing on strengthening state institutions, improving public service delivery, and promoting sound economic governance. Colleagues often remembered him as a "thorough gentleman" and a dedicated mentor to younger officers.
He is survived by his family, including his sons-in-law, Sanjeev Kaushal (a former Haryana Chief Secretary) and Sarvesh Kaushal (a former Punjab Chief Secretary).
