In an effort to make Haryana’s roads safer, Director General of Police (DGP) OP Singh has written to both the central and state governments, urging immediate rectification of accident-prone locations across the state, according to an official statement issued on Wednesday.

The DGP has addressed the letter to V Umashankar, Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), and Anurag Aggarwal, Additional Chief Secretary, Public Works (Buildings and Roads) Department, Haryana government.

In his communication, Singh noted that a joint study by the Haryana Police and the transport department found several “black spots”, places where five or more accidents have occurred within a short span.

Between 2019-20 and 2023-24, 474 such black spots were identified. Of these, 223 have been rectified, while 251 still need attention, Singh stated.

He highlighted that delays in carrying out engineering work such as repairing roads, putting up traffic signs, building service lanes, installing lights, and other safety measures continue to cause frequent accidents and loss of lives.

According to the statement, Singh has urged the ministry and the PWD to direct their Project Implementing Units and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to ensure quick and quality rectification of all pending black spots.

He stressed that completing these improvements on time will not only make the roads safer but will also help reduce Haryana’s road accident death rate.

“The Haryana Police is not limited to maintaining law and order; we are equally committed to ensuring the safety of citizens' lives. Reducing road accidents requires a collective effort of the police, administration, and engineering departments. Every life is precious, and our mission is to make every road safe,” he added.
