At least five employees, two of whom were women, were reported killed in a dramatic explosion at a firecracker unit factory in Sivakasi in the district on Tuesday, police said.
The conflagration reduced the unit to ashes and left scores injured, they said. Plumes of smoke that rose from the factory as the firecrackers exploded, could be seen from far away.
Police and fire and rescue workers who arrived at the location, evacuated the wounded to the hospital. The blaze was contained and debris removal efforts were underway at the moment, a fire and rescue services department official informed.
