A major accident was avoided after a fire broke out at the historic Gurdwara Shaheed Ganj Sahib, also known as Shaheedan Sahib, in Amritsar on Wednesday. Panic spread after decorative cloth canopies inside the gurdwara reportedly caught fire due to a short circuit.

 

As per information, the fire suddenly broke out in the canopies installed inside the gurdwara complex. As the cloth material caught fire quickly, flames spread rapidly, creating panic among devotees present there.

 

However, the timely response of sewadars and members of the sangat helped prevent a major tragedy. Witnesses said volunteers and devotees immediately started trying to douse the fire using buckets of water and pipes. Their quick action helped bring the blaze under control within a short time. Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported.

After the incident, the gurdwara management removed the burnt material and began installing new canopies to restore arrangements for devotees.

 

According to officials, efforts were being made to return things to normal at the earliest while maintaining the sanctity and convenience of the religious place. Addressing reporters, sewadar Gurdial Singh said the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit. He stated that around 40 to 50 sewadars and devotees helped control the flames before the situation could worsen.


He appealed to the government and management committees to maintain round-the-clock fire safety measures and proper water systems at historic religious sites. He said stronger safety infrastructure is needed to ensure devotees’ safety in future.
