The beleaguered Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) in Telangana continues to suffer desertions from its camp. The latest to leave the party and switch over to the ruling Congress is Arekapudi Gandhi, the legislator representing Serilingampally on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

Gandhi, along with four BRS corporators in the Hyderabad municipal corporation, joined the Congress in the presence of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Saturday. With this, the number of BRS MLAs crossing over to Congress has reached 9.

Once seen as the architect of the Telangana statehood movement, the BRS suffered a severe drubbing in the recent assembly polls, managing to win 39 seats in the 119-member House, while Congress came to power with 64 seats. Following a change of guard in the state, the regional party is now struggling to keep its flock together.

On Friday, another BRS MLA from Rajendranagar Prakash Goud quit the party to join the Congress. There are reports that some more legislators are keen to switch over to the ruling party soon.

Notwithstanding a series of meetings the BRS supremo and former Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao had with the party legislators in the last few weeks, the exodus continues to haunt the party.

Earlier, Dr Sanjay Kumar, former Assembly Speaker Pocharam Srinivas Reddy, Danam Nagender, Kadiam Srihari were among the prominent BRS legislators who defected to the Congress.
