A tragic land subsidence incident in the Katras area of Dhanbad district in Jharkhand claimed three lives after a house collapsed in Tandabar Basti under Sonardih OP limits on Tuesday evening.

The victims were pulled out from the debris during a late-night rescue operation that continued till around 2:30–3:00 am.

The deceased have been identified as Manohar Oraon, his daughter Geeta Devi, and Sarita Devi. According to officials, the house of Manohar Oraon was completely destroyed in the sudden subsidence, trapping all three under the rubble.

Family members said that at the time of the incident, Manohar Oraon and his daughter were inside the house, while Sarita Devi had come visiting for some work. The sudden collapse left them with no time to react, leading to their deaths on the spot.

Chhotu Devi, wife of the deceased Manohar Oraon, said she was not at home when the incident occurred and had gone to a nearby house. “My husband, daughter, and Sarita were inside when the land suddenly caved in,” she said.

Sarita Devi’s daughter also confirmed that her mother had gone to visit the Oraon family when the tragedy struck. The bodies were recovered only after a prolonged and challenging rescue effort carried out during the night.

Following the incident, grieving family members have levelled serious allegations against the administration, claiming that delays in initiating rescue operations may have cost the victims their lives.

They accused authorities of negligence and said that timely intervention could have possibly saved all three.

The incident has once again raised concerns over land subsidence in coal belt regions and the preparedness of local authorities to respond swiftly to such emergencies.
