Water crisis in Delhi - PTI

Considering the water scarcity in the national capital, the Delhi government has requested Haryana to release extra water into the Yamuna river on humanitarian grounds, as stated by senior AAP leader and minister Atishi on Saturday. She is also Delhi's water minister.

The Delhi water minister also mentioned during a press briefing that the city is experiencing a 70 million gallons per day (MGD) water shortage due to the unavailability of raw water in the Munak Canal and Wazirabad reservoir.

She noted that the regular water production of approximately 1,002 MGD in Delhi on June 6 dropped to 932 MGD on Friday due to the lack of raw water.

"The Delhi government has appealed to Haryana to release additional water for the people of the city on humanitarian grounds," the minister said, adding that issues related to the share of Yamuna water can be discussed after heatwave conditions abate.

Delhi is experiencing a decrease in water production to 932 MGD due to insufficient inflow from Haryana.

According to the statement, the water level at the Wazirabad Barrage has dropped by six feet to 668.5 feet, and the water received from the Munak Canal has decreased to 902 cusecs.

The current water level at the Wazirabad Barrage falls short of the required 674.5 feet and stands at 668.5 feet.

According to the minister, the water at Wazirabad Barrage is almost depleted, and no water is coming in at all. DJB tankers are presently making approximately 10,000 trips to supply water-scarce areas with 10 MGD of water per day.
