An aircraft waits to take off at the runway as dense smog reduces visibility and engulfs IGI airport.

On Thursday morning, the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) in New Delhi issued a passenger advisory due to prevailing dense fog, informing travellers that Low Visibility Procedures (LVP) had been activated while emphasising that flight operations remained normal.

The advisory was released at approximately 4:30 am by Delhi Airport authorities, highlighting that foggy weather had significantly lowered visibility, necessitating the implementation of LVP for enhanced safety during aircraft movements. Despite this, officials noted no significant disruptions to flights at that time.

The official statement posted by Delhi Airport on X read, "Low-visibility procedures are in progress at Delhi Airport. All flight operations are presently normal. Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information." Airport officials advised passengers to stay in regular contact with their airlines for the most current information regarding flight schedules, departures, and arrivals.

This advisory was issued against the backdrop of ongoing dense fog and deteriorating air quality in Delhi, which have been impacting visibility particularly during early morning hours, and occasionally affecting air traffic.

Meanwhile, much of the national capital was enveloped in a thick blanket of toxic smog, leading to sharply reduced visibility and health concerns for residents. In RK Puram, the area was covered in dense smog with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 374, falling into the 'very poor' category, as reported by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

Anand Vihar recorded an even higher AQI of 415, entering the 'severe' category. In response, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has activated all measures under Stage-IV of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across Delhi-NCR. Areas surrounding Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium were also shrouded in thick smog, with an AQI of 349, classified as 'very poor'.

The Najafgarh area reported a slightly lower AQI of 284, though it remained surrounded by toxic smog. Dhaula Kuan was blanketed in toxic smog this morning, recording an AQI of 266, which is categorised as 'poor'.

Outside ISBT Kashmere Gate, a dense layer of toxic smog prevailed, with the AQI measured at 384. For reference, the standard AQI categorisation is as follows: 0-50 is 'good', 51-100 'satisfactory', 101-200 'moderate', 201-300 'poor', 301-400 'very poor', and 401-500 'severe'. These conditions underscore the combined impact of seasonal fog and persistent pollution challenges in the capital during the winter months.
