The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) has initiated a major restructuring of its Minority Cell following the resignation of its chairperson, K Abdul Jabbar, amid growing internal tensions within the party.

In a swift move aimed at addressing organisational friction, the KPCC has dissolved all minority committees at the state, district, assembly, and block levels. The decision was announced through an official statement on social media, with the party indicating that a new committee will be constituted soon after consultations with key stakeholders. The development comes at a time when the ruling Congress unit in Karnataka is facing disagreements over recent electoral strategies.

Jabbar tendered his resignation on Saturday in a letter addressed to KPCC President and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar. In his letter, he expressed dissatisfaction with the party’s handling of the Davanagere South by-election, alleging that minority leaders were sidelined during the campaign.

“Recent political developments in Davanagere and across Karnataka during the by-elections have forced me to take this step,” Jabbar stated, adding that the lack of consultation with the Minority Department had caused discontent among party workers. “There was no direct attempt to take inputs from us. My colleagues are disappointed, and I share those same feelings,” he said.

The resignation has brought underlying tensions within the party to the forefront. According to reports, the Congress high command received negative feedback regarding the roles played by Jabbar and state minister Zameer Ahmed Khan during the campaign. Allegations of internal sabotage and factionalism have also surfaced, particularly in the Davanagere South region.

Other senior leaders have voiced concerns over the situation. MLA Rizwan Arshad pointed to disagreements over candidate selection, stating that tensions arose due to the insistence on a single name. Meanwhile, MLC Saleem Ahmed alleged that a “conspiracy” within the party may have undermined the Congress candidate, though he maintained that minority voters continue to largely support the party.

Political observers view the sweeping overhaul as an attempt by the Congress leadership to restore discipline and unity within its Karnataka unit. By dissolving existing committees, the party appears to be seeking a reset in its internal structure. However, the move also underscores the ongoing challenge of managing competing interests and maintaining cohesion within a diverse political organisation.

As the KPCC prepares to reconstitute its Minority Cell, attention will be on whether the restructuring can address internal divisions and strengthen the party’s organisational strategy in the state.
