Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Tuesday accused the Congress and the Shiromani Akali Dal of ignoring the education sector when they were in power. He said both parties focused more on promoting the families of their top leaders than improving public services.
He also took a swipe at the BJP. Mann alleged that the party was trying to strengthen itself in Punjab by relying on leaders who had switched over from other political parties.
After laying the foundation stone of a government industrial training institute (ITI) in Sardulgarh, Mann said the AAP government is committed to providing quality education and skill training to the youth of the state.
Listing his government’s achievements, Mann said 118 Schools of Eminence have been established and teachers have been sent abroad for training to improve education standards. He added that 881 Aam Aadmi Clinics have been opened to offer free healthcare and that more than 90 per cent of households are getting free electricity.
He further said the use of canal water for irrigation has increased significantly and thousands of watercourses have been revived to help farmers. Mann added that more than 63,000 government jobs have been given without bribery or political recommendation.
Speaking about the proposed ITI in Sardulgarh, the Chief Minister said it will be built at a cost of about Rs 24.50 crore. The institute will train 240 students every year in five trades — electrician, electric vehicle mechanic, refrigeration and air conditioning, industrial robotics, and CNC machining. Senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia and Punjab Cabinet ministers were present at the event.
