A minor girl appearing for her Class X board examination gave birth to a child inside an exam centre in Pithampur of Dhar district, Madhya Pradesh, Education Department officials said.
The incident occurred under the jurisdiction of the Sector 1 Police Station and left school authorities and students shocked.
According to officials, the student had arrived at the examination centre as scheduled but soon complained of severe stomach pain. Unable to bear the discomfort, she went to the washroom, where she delivered the baby.
School authorities immediately alerted emergency services, and a team from the 108 Ambulance Service rushed the girl and the newborn to the Community Health Centre, Pithampur for medical care.
Police registered a zero-case complaint due to the seriousness of the matter and transferred it to the concerned police station for further investigation.
Sub-inspector Chandni Singar said the minor disclosed that she had been in a relationship with a young man for about two years and had been physically involved with him for the past year, which resulted in the pregnancy.
“The girl’s family was unaware of the relationship. After the delivery, she informed her parents about the incident,” the officer said, adding that a case has been registered and efforts are underway to arrest the accused. Legal action will be taken in accordance with the law, police said.
Meanwhile, gynaecologist Prashant Kajve confirmed that both the girl and the newborn are stable.
“The minor student was brought to the hospital with the newborn around 2 p.m. on Tuesday. Both are healthy and under observation,” he said.
