Rescue personnel carry out an operation to save a four-year-old boy who fell into a 220-foot-deep borewell in Ambala on Tuesday.

A four-year-old boy fell into a 220-foot-deep open borewell in Dhanaura village of Haryana's Ambala district on Tuesday morning, officials said. Rescue teams are racing against time to bring the child to safety.

The boy, identified as Nirbhay, had accompanied his father to the family's fields to deliver food to his grandfather. While playing nearby, he accidentally slipped into the uncovered borewell.

Soon after the incident, Deputy Commissioner Ajay Singh Tomar and other senior officials reached the spot to monitor the rescue operation. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the Army have been deployed to rescue the child.

According to the Deputy Commissioner, the incident took place at around 6.30 am. He said the borewell is about 220 feet deep and has a diameter of nearly nine inches. The NDRF is using specialised equipment, while Army personnel have also joined the operation.

According to the family, Nirbhay's grandfather, Karnail Singh, had gone to the fields early in the morning. Later, his father, Manjit, went to take food to him. Nirbhay insisted on going along, and his father agreed.

After reaching the field, Manjit got busy with work while Karnail Singh began eating. Nirbhay, who was playing nearby, noticed the open borewell. He started throwing soil into it and, while looking inside, is believed to have slipped on the wet ground and fallen into the borewell.

Manjit said they heard a loud sound and immediately rushed to the spot. They called out to Nirbhay and tried to rescue him with the help of nearby villagers. When they were unable to pull him out, they informed the authorities at around 7.30 am, following which a large-scale rescue operation was launched.
