The Centre has sanctioned Rs 273.46 crore for the expansion of infrastructure and academic facilities at Agartala Government Medical College, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha said on Friday.

The allocation, approved by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, will help increase 100 MBBS seats and 83 postgraduate seats in 19 speciality and critical care disciplines from the 2026-27 academic session, Saha said.

“The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare sanctions Rs 273.46 crore for expansion of Agartala Government Medical College. I would like to thank Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji and Hon’ble Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda Ji for sanctioning Rs 273.46 crore for infrastructure development of Agartala Government Medical College,” the chief minister posted on X.

Saha, who also holds the health portfolio, said the expansion would significantly strengthen medical education and healthcare infrastructure in the northeastern state.

According to the chief minister, the sanctioned project will take Tripura’s total MBBS seats to 550 and postgraduate seats to 196, which he described as a “record increase” achieved over the last four years.

“We are committed to improving health services for citizens as well as medical education opportunities for young aspirants in the state,” he said.

Officials said the expansion is expected to include the development of academic blocks, laboratories, hostels and other facilities required to accommodate the increased intake of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Speaking to reporters later, Saha said the Centre has consistently extended support to the state for infrastructure and healthcare development.

“Whenever we seek something, the Centre takes it seriously,” he said.

The Centre has in recent years focused on strengthening medical education infrastructure across the Northeast, with several states witnessing an increase in MBBS seats, establishment of new medical colleges and expansion of speciality healthcare facilities.
