The Hyderabad police have registered a case regarding a fake and AI-generated video that falsely depicts MP and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) President Asaduddin Owaisi.
The complaint was filed by Mohammed Irfan Khan, an administrative member of the AIMIM social media team. It alleges that certain social media accounts posted fabricated videos with the intent of spreading misinformation, hurting religious sentiments, and creating disharmony.
A case has been registered based on the complaint, which falls under the applicable sections of the Information Technology Act, 2008, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Apart from that, a Private Member's Bill aiming at having a clear legal framework for the regulation of deepfakes was introduced in the Lok Sabha.
The Bill, titled Regulation of Deepfake, moved by Shiv Sena leader Shrikant Shinde in the House on Friday, seeks to safeguard citizens by making prior consent of the individual depicted in deepfake content mandatory. The Bill also enumerates certain penalties for offenders who create or disseminate deepfake content with malicious intent.
