The President of the Jharkhand Bharatiya Janata Party, Babulal Marandi, announced on Wednesday that the party will celebrate ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Divas’ (Tribal Pride Day) across the state on November 15, marking the birth anniversary of freedom fighter Birsa Munda.
Marandi confirmed that a major function will be organised in Khunti district, with floral tributes being offered at Munda’s statue in his birthplace, Ulihatu, on the day.
“In Ranchi, a procession will be taken out from the Birsa Munda Museum and Memorial Park, located at the Old Central Jail, and will culminate at Ranchi’s Kokar on November 15,” Marandi told the media.
Birsa Munda, born on November 15, 1875, led a powerful tribal uprising against British rule. He died at the age of 25 while in custody.
Marandi stated that while there will be an official government function in Ranchi to celebrate both the state’s foundation day and Munda’s birth anniversary, the BJP will hold its own separate programmes. The former Chief Minister urged party workers to clean and garland the statues of all freedom fighters from Jharkhand on November 15 as part of the ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Divas’ commemorations.
Marandi stressed that Birsa Munda remains a source of inspiration not just for the people of Jharkhand, but for the entire nation.
The state of Jharkhand was formally created on November 15, 2000, by carving out the southern districts of Bihar, thereby fulfilling a decades-long demand for a separate homeland for tribal communities. Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the Prime Minister at the time of its formation.
Marandi highlighted the party's commitment to tribal communities: “It was Atal ji who also formed a separate tribal ministry in the central government. It is the BJP that respects the tribal community. Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided to celebrate the birth anniversary of Birsa Munda as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas in 2021. He has launched several schemes and policies for the development and upliftment of the tribal community.”
