Joyful celebrations erupted in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday after local cricketer Auqib Nabi Dar secured a Rs 8.40 crore deal with Delhi Capitals at the IPL auction.
Dar, who hails from Sheeri town in north Kashmir, was bought by Delhi Capitals for the impressive amount. The news sparked scenes of happiness and excitement in his neighbourhood.
As word of his selection spread, family members, relatives, neighbours and friends gathered at Dar’s home to celebrate the big achievement. People danced to the beat of traditional drums as the area turned lively and festive.
Dar’s family distributed sweets and offered prayers. They said the achievement was the result of God’s blessings and Dar’s years of dedication and hard work.
“I thank God that I have lived to see this day. His selection is the result of his hard work. I am extremely happy, beyond words. It is only God’s blessings and Aqib’s hard work,” said his father Ghulam Nabi, who is a schoolteacher.
He also advised young people to focus on their education along with sports and stay away from bad habits.
Dar’s friends, relatives and neighbours shared similar views. They praised his discipline, commitment and consistent efforts over the years.
“It is a moment of immense happiness for all of us. Celebrations are going on. He has always been a hard worker and we cannot express this joy in words,” said his relative Sajad-ul-Bashir.
Bashir said that sports had brought recognition to Sheeri and north Kashmir. He encouraged parents to support their children’s interests and avoid putting unnecessary pressure on them.
Dar has delivered strong and consistent performances in both the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Ranji Trophy this season.
