The Muslim community across Kerala celebrated Bakrid, also known as Eid-al-Adha, with deep religious fervour and enthusiasm on Thursday, as thousands of devotees gathered at mosques and specially prepared Eidgahs across the state to offer prayers marking the festival of sacrifice.

From the early hours of the morning, faithful, including men, women, children and elderly people, thronged mosques and open-air prayer grounds to participate in the traditional Eid namaz. Large gatherings were witnessed in major cities as well as rural areas, with worshippers dressed in festive attire exchanging greetings and prayers after the ceremonies.

Special prayers were held under tight arrangements at several Eidgahs, where religious leaders delivered sermons highlighting the values of sacrifice, compassion, brotherhood and charity associated with Eid-al-Adha. Scholars and clerics urged believers to uphold Islamic principles and work towards peace, harmony and communal unity in society.

The festival commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command, symbolising faith, devotion and selflessness. Following the prayers, many families participated in the traditional ritual sacrifice and shared food with relatives, neighbours and the underprivileged as part of the celebrations.

In several districts, religious and cultural organisations organised charitable activities, including the distribution of food, clothes and financial assistance to poor and needy families. Community kitchens and relief programmes were also arranged in some areas to ensure that the spirit of sharing and compassion remained central to the celebrations.

The festive atmosphere was visible across the state, with markets and shopping centres witnessing heavy crowds ahead of the celebrations. Children were seen enjoying the occasion with family members, while people visited relatives and friends to exchange Eid greetings.

Political leaders and dignitaries extended their wishes to the people on the occasion. Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar conveyed his greetings and expressed hope that the festival would strengthen the values of love, peace and social harmony.

Chief Minister V D Satheesan also greeted the people of the state, stating that Bakrid conveys the message of sacrifice, humanity and unity among communities. Leader of Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan similarly extended his wishes, calling upon people to uphold the spirit of compassion and mutual respect symbolised by the festival.

Bakrid celebrations across Kerala concluded peacefully, with devotees observing the festival in a spirit of faith, charity and togetherness.
