The sacred Badrinath shrine, one of the four ‘chardham’ pilgrimages in the Garhwal Himalayas, will close its doors for the winter on November 25, temple authorities announced on Thursday.
The date and timing of the closure of temple’s doors in Chamoli district were decided by priests after a traditional Vijayadashami ritual.
According to Dr Harish Gaur, PRO of the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee, the temple gates will close at 2:56 pm on November 25. The portals of Kedarnath and Yamunotri shrines will close earlier on October 23, while Gangotri will follow on October 24, a day after Diwali.
Each year, due to heavy snowfall and freezing weather, the ‘chardham’ temples in the high Himalayas are closed between October and November and reopen in April or May.
The six-month-long ‘chardham yatra’ is regarded as a major pillar of Uttarakhand’s economy.
