A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and further investigation is underway to trace the wider drug trafficking network involved.

In a major crackdown on illegal drug trafficking, Assam Police on Tuesday have seized 90,000 Yaba tablets worth approximately ₹27 crore in Cachar district and arrested two persons in connection with the case. The arrested persons have been identified as Dalim Uddin Laskar and Abed Sultan Barbhuiya, both residents of Dholai in Cachar district.

Yaba, also known as “crazy medicine” in Thai, is a synthetic drug containing methamphetamine, a highly addictive stimulant. The seizure was made at Rongpur in Cachar district after police intercepted a truck suspected of transporting contraband from Champhai district in neighbouring Mizoram to Guwahati.

“The operation was launched based on specific intelligence inputs regarding the movement of a large consignment of banned narcotics. Acting on the tip-off, police teams were deployed at strategic locations, leading to the interception of the truck. A thorough search of the vehicle resulted in the recovery of the Yaba tablets from a concealed compartment,” said a police officer.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma lauded the police action, calling it a significant success in the state’s anti-narcotics drive. Taking to social media platform X, he said, “YABA tablets worth ₹27 crore— now history! In an excellent anti-narcotics operation by @cacharpolice in Rongpur, a vehicle coming from a neighbouring state was intercepted, leading to the seizure of 90,000 Yaba tablets and the arrest of two persons.”

A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and further investigation is underway to trace the wider drug trafficking network involved.

Meanwhile, in a separate operation on Sunday, Assam Police arrested seven people and seized 86 kg of opium during a raid at a residential house in Udiana village in Kamrup district. Police said the raid was also carried out based on specific intelligence inputs. The house owner, who was among those arrested, had reportedly been booked earlier in a similar narcotics case.

Police officials said investigations are continuing in both cases as part of the State’s intensified efforts to curb drug trafficking.
