The flood situation in Assam has escalated, with the death toll now surpassing 90, as reported by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

Over five lakh people across 18 districts are reeling under the impact, with Cachar district facing the worst of the deluge.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah contacted Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to take stock of the situation, promising central assistance and support from the National Disaster Response Force.

This call was part of a series of communications Shah made to states severely affected by floods, including Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.

The deluge has inundated 1,342 villages across 52 revenue circles, devastating over 25,000 hectares of crop area.

Major rivers such as the Brahmaputra, Burhidihing, and Disang are flowing above danger levels at various locations.

More than 58,000 people have taken shelter in 172 relief camps and distribution centres spread across 13 districts.

The floods have also impacted nearly 2.84 lakh domestic animals, underscoring the extensive nature of the crisis.

The affected districts include Cachar, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Karimganj, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, and Sivasagar.

The state government, along with central agencies, is engaged in relief and rescue operations.

However, the enormity of the disaster poses significant challenges in accessing all affected areas and providing immediate aid.

As Assam battles this relentless crisis, efforts are concentrated on rescue missions, delivering essential supplies to the displaced, and strategizing for long-term recovery and flood mitigation.
