An investigation conducted jointly by Indian Army intelligence units and Rajasthan Police has uncovered an alleged counterfeit military uniform network operating in Rajasthan's Sriganganagar district. The coordinated operation led to the seizure of nearly 1,000 metres of unauthorised combat cloth, designed to mimic official Army patterns, from several local retail outlets.
The operation originated from an earlier seizure of illicit combat fabric in Bareilly in June. Investigators tracing the origin of those materials identified a manufacturing source based in Sriganganagar. Based on this clue, army intelligence operatives conducted an unobtrusive investigation that discovered a local company which served as the fulcrum through which the counterfeited material was being disseminated across the area.
It came to light that the company was selling the imitation military-patterned material to businessmen in Sriganganagar town and other local commercial marketplaces in Lalgarh Jattan, Suratgarh, and other surrounding regions. After enough evidence had been gathered, an interim report was handed to the Rajasthan Police in mid-July.
The operation resulted in searches conducted on July 30 at several targeted locations in the area. The searches were successful in retrieving around 1,000 meters of the forbidden material, which was almost similar to the recently developed combat uniform of the members of the armed forces.
Security authorities have made it clear that it is a criminal act to possess, distribute or sell any type of military style combat material. The fact that such materials are easily available gives rise to a security threat since it will enable individuals to pose as members of the army and indulge in any kind of criminal activity. It has now become a priority for investigators to find out the entire distribution network and whether the material has been sent to other markets outside Rajasthan.
