The last rites of the Indian Army’s Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO), Subedar Sajeesh K, who lost his life in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district after he fell into a deep gorge two days earlier, were held with full military honours at his residence on Sunday, officials said.
Subedar Sajeesh K was leading a search in the Seri Mastan area of Behramgalla on Friday evening when he accidentally slipped to his death while negotiating a steep slope in the mountain pass.
Shortly afterwards, the search and rescue team of the army recovered his dead body from the site.
According to officials, his body was sent home on Saturday after all legal medico-legal formalities had been completed.
Hundreds of mourners, including Indian Union Muslim League national general secretary PK Kunhalikutty, gathered to pay their respects to the deceased officer.
The funeral was conducted with full military honours, including a gun salute, after which the soldier’s body was cremated by his sons.
Last month, two Para Special Forces personnel were killed during a routine patrol when a snow avalanche triggered by heavy snowfall swept them away in a Kulgam forest.
As many as 12 soldiers have been killed in separate accidents in Kulgam, Doda, Kishtwar, and Ladakh in recent months, according to official stats.
The deadliest accident occurred on May 4 in Ramban, when a convoy vehicle skidded off the Jammu–Srinagar Highway and plunged into a 700-foot-deep gorge, killing three personnel.
