Punjab Police on Saturday apprehended another accused in connection with the freight corridor railway track blast at Shambhu in Patiala district. The arrested accused has been identified as Gurjinder Singh alias Baba Beant. He was nabbed in a joint operation conducted by the State Special Operation Cell in Amritsar, Patiala Police and the Counter Intelligence wing in Pathankot, Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said.

Police said Gurjinder was a close associate of Jagroop Singh, who was killed while allegedly trying to detonate explosives on the railway track on the night of April 27.

According to the DGP, “Preliminary investigation revealed his role in the Shambhu blast, Sirhind railway track blast, and grenade attack on CIA #Moga, all executed under the directions of foreign-based handlers.”

Police said the blast was carried out by a pro-Khalistan terror module allegedly backed by Pakistan’s ISI. Earlier, four members linked to the module had already been arrested.

The explosion took place near Bothonia village on the freight rail corridor track. The blast damaged a portion of the track and created a small crater beneath the railway line, officials said.

Initially, authorities described the incident as a low-intensity explosion. However, further investigation indicated that it was an attempt to blow up the railway track. This was the second such attempt targeting the dedicated freight corridor in the past three months. In January, a similar blast near Sirhind in Fatehgarh Sahib damaged a train engine and left a loco pilot injured.
