Mystery surrounds the death of a young man who died while in the custody of the Jandiala Guru police on Sunday. The incident sparked a strong protest by his family members, who alleged that he died because of police torture.
The victim, identified as Harman Singh, was allegedly picked up by the Jandiala police on Saturday evening. He died on Sunday morning while still in custody. Police officials said his health suddenly worsened, and he was rushed to a hospital where he later died.
The family, however, rejected the police statement, saying Harman was completely fine before he was taken from his home. The victim’s family accused the police of torture and foul play; and later blocked traffic on the main GT Road, raising slogans against the Punjab Police.
Balwinder Kaur, Harman’s mother, said he had been arrested for questioning after a fight in the village. She said his paternal uncle met him in custody on Saturday night and found him normal. When the family went to the police station on Sunday morning with tea, they were told he had been taken to the hospital after falling ill.
DSP Ravinder Singh said the exact cause of death would be known only after the postmortem. He added that an investigation has been initiated into the incident.
