Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi (L), Union Home Minister Amit Shah (C), and BJP’s Nitin Nabin (R) will be in Assam this week ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.

Assam gears up for high-stakes Assembly elections expected in March-April 2026, with key leaders from Congress and BJP intensifying organisational efforts and strategic manoeuvres in the state. The ruling BJP emphasises border security and development, while Congress focuses on internal assessments and candidate selection.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, chairperson of the party's screening committee for Assam polls, arrives on February 18 for a two-day visit. She will reach Rajiv Bhawan at 11:30 am and engage in extensive deliberations to evaluate the party's preparedness and shape its electoral strategy.

Her itinerary includes a screening committee meeting, followed by sessions with the Political Affairs Committee of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), chairpersons of five APCC committees, and one-on-one interactions with 21 Congress MLAs, 35 District Congress Committee presidents, heads of four frontal organisations, and Congress Legislature Party leader Debabrata Saikia.

On February 19, she will meet APCC working presidents, Congress MPs, and heads of APCC cells and departments at Rajiv Bhawan. Later, she will hold discussions with Block Congress Committee presidents and APCC office bearers at Manabendra Sarma Complex in Dispur before departing for New Delhi.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will visit Assam starting February 20, culminating in a high-profile trip to the India-Bangladesh international border in Cachar district’s Natanpur village on February 21. The visit underscores the BJP’s core poll plank of cracking down on illegal immigration from Bangladesh.

Shah is expected to arrive in the state on February 20 and reach Natanpur the next morning to participate in a Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP) event organised by the Home Ministry. The programme emphasises livelihood generation, tourism promotion, cultural heritage preservation, skill development, and strengthening agriculture and allied sectors in border villages.

Local preparations are underway, with Cachar District Commissioner Ayush Garg, State Minister Kaushik Rai, BSF officers, and police reviewing security and arrangements. Natanpur, located in Katigorah area, has witnessed the apprehension of over 200 illegal migrants, including nationals from Bangladesh and Myanmar, in recent years, making the site symbolically significant for the BJP’s narrative on border management.

Separately, newly elected BJP national president Nitin Nabin begins his first visit to Upper Assam on February 18 for a two-day organisational tour covering Dibrugarh and Tinsukia. He will attend a Prista Pramukh Sanmelan at Khanikar field in Dibrugarh, with Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also present.

On February 19, Nabin will visit Tinsukia to pay tribute at the Maidam of Matak king Sarbananda Singh, followed by a zonal meeting involving leaders from seven to eight districts. In Dibrugarh, he will interact with mandal presidents from 18 mandals across six constituencies to finalise election roadmaps. The BJP aims to consolidate and expand its strong performance in Upper Assam from the previous polls.
