Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Tuesday informed the State Assembly that the government has recovered nearly Rs 556 crore in the IDFC First Bank fraud case. “Nearly Rs 556 crore, including about Rs 22 crore as interest, was credited back within 24 hours,” Saini told the House.

On Sunday, the bank had revealed that a Rs 590-crore fraud involving its employees and others in accounts held by the Haryana government. “I want to clarify before the House that the entire amount related to Haryana government departments has been deposited back into our accounts. The recovery was completed within 24 hours,” Saini said.

He said the bank informed the government that the fraud was mainly linked to a specific branch in Chandigarh. It allegedly involved four to five middle- and lower-level employees who colluded in the matter. The Chief Minister said the government will ensure that anyone involved — whether a bank employee, a private individual or even a government official — will face action.

On Monday, Saini had said that the state’s Anti-Corruption Bureau would carry out a detailed investigation into the fraud. “We have formed a committee headed by the Finance Secretary to examine the entire matter,” Saini said on Monday.

Taking a swipe at the Congress, Saini said that during its tenure, scams were often covered up and accountability was lacking. He added that the BJP government follows a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption. The opposition Congress had earlier raised the IDFC First Bank issue in the Assembly.

The Rs 590-crore fraud in Haryana government accounts was the result of alleged collusion between certain IDFC Bank employees and external parties, the bank’s Managing Director and CEO V Vaidyanathan said on Monday.

Speaking during a special call with investors and analysts ahead of the stock market opening, Vaidyanathan said the bank would make certain provisions in its accounts due to the fraud.
