A deeply disturbing case of sexual assault involving a five-year-old girl has been reported from Bhilai, Chhattisgarh, triggering widespread outrage and protests in the area. Police have arrested a 40-year-old man in connection with the incident.
According to officials, the crime took place under the jurisdiction of the Utai Police Station on Friday. The child had returned home from school around 11:00 am before stepping out to a nearby shop after taking some money from her grandmother. When she failed to return even after two hours, her family members began searching for her, soon joined by villagers.
After an extensive search, two local youths noticed a suspicious sack lying near a well in a deserted area. On closer inspection, they found the sack moving slightly. Upon opening it, they discovered the unconscious child inside, her mouth gagged with a cloth.
Family members immediately rushed her home and then to a nearby hospital. Police confirmed that the child is currently stable and undergoing treatment.
Speaking on the incident, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Anoop Lakra said that the police were alerted after the girl was found inside the sack. A team rushed to the scene, and an investigation was promptly launched. The accused was soon identified and taken into custody. A team of forensic experts has also collected evidence from his residence.
The incident sparked intense anger among locals, with nearly 150 villagers gathering outside the police station late at night, demanding the harshest punishment for the accused. Police resorted to mild force to disperse the crowd and restore order.
Condemning the crime, Durg MP Vijay Baghel termed the act a “blot on humanity” and called for strict and exemplary punishment. He also pointed out that such crimes are often committed by individuals known to the victim’s family.
