At least three people, including a Class-X student, were killed and several others injured after a tipper lorry carrying soil lost control and overturned onto a bus stop in Kerala’s Kollam district on Tuesday morning, police said. The deceased have been identified as Harilal (54), Parthip (15), and Ajayakumar (45). Parthip was a Class-X student at a private school in the area.
According to police officials, the accident occurred around 7:00 am at Mukoli Mukku in Kottarakkara town, when the speeding tipper lorry, loaded with soil, collided with a motorcycle before losing control and overturning onto a bus stop where several students had gathered.
“At least three people, including a child, have lost their lives. Five people have been rescued so far,” a police officer said.
Around ten individuals, including seven children, were present at the bus stop at the time of the incident. Some of the children managed to escape moments before the lorry overturned, eyewitnesses said.
The impact of the crash caused the soil carried by the vehicle to spill across the road and the bus stop, burying several victims underneath. Local residents, alerted by a loud noise, rushed to the scene and initiated rescue efforts before police and fire brigade personnel arrived.
The heavily damaged lorry was later lifted using an excavator, allowing rescuers to pull out those trapped beneath.
The injured were immediately taken to a nearby hospital in Kottarakkara. Due to the severity of injuries in several cases, some victims are likely to be shifted to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Police have registered a case and are currently examining CCTV footage from the area to determine the exact cause of the accident.
