A major crackdown on alleged examination malpractice led to the arrest of 159 candidates appearing for the Jharkhand Excise Police Recruitment Examination, along with five others, in Ranchi on Sunday, police said.

According to authorities, the five additional individuals are suspected to be key members of a gang involved in irregularities in competitive examinations. The arrests were made following a tip-off received by the Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), who was informed about a large gathering of candidates at a building in Rargaon under the Tamar police station limits.

Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) Chairman Prashant Kumar confirmed the development, stating that the operation was carried out after authorities acted swiftly on the intelligence input. “Over 159 students were detained after information was received about suspicious activity at the location,” he said.

During the raid, officials recovered four sets of question papers that were allegedly being circulated among the candidates. These papers, available in both printed and digital formats, were claimed to be the actual questions for the excise recruitment examination conducted the same day. However, preliminary findings indicate that the seized papers did not exactly match the questions asked in the examination.

Police have launched an extensive investigation into the matter, with interrogations of the arrested candidates currently underway. Officials also stated that raids are being conducted to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in the suspected paper leak racket.
