Tragedy struck in Mumbai's Mulund area on Saturday afternoon when a section of an under-construction metro pillar collapsed, killing one person and injuring three others. The heavy concrete segment fell directly onto a moving autorickshaw on the busy LBS Road near the Johnson and Johnson factory around 12:20 pm, crushing the vehicle beneath the debris.
Part of a nearby car was also damaged in the collapse. According to reports, the deceased and injured were traveling in the autorickshaw at the time of the incident.
The Mumbai Fire Brigade, police, and ambulances were immediately dispatched to the location to perform rescue operations. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has expressed condolences over the incident and ordered an investigation. In addition, the Chief Minister has also announced compensation of ₹5 lakh to the family of the deceased and that the state government would pay for the treatment of the injured.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which is managing the metro project, stated they are monitoring the condition of the injured and providing necessary medical support. While initial reports from the authority suggested two injuries, it was later confirmed that one person had lost their life. Police are currently working to identify the victim as rescue workers clear the site.
