Indian long jumper Murali Sreeshankar etched his name into the record books by becoming the first Indian athlete to win two consecutive medals in the men's long jump at the Commonwealth Games. The 27-year-old produced a composed and determined performance to secure the silver medal with a best leap of 8.09 metres, marking a remarkable comeback after overcoming a career-threatening knee injury that kept him away from competition for an extended period.

Having first climbed the Commonwealth Games podium in Birmingham in 2022 with a silver-medal finish, Sreeshankar successfully repeated the feat in Glasgow, reaffirming his status as one of India's premier field athletes. His latest achievement not only adds another prestigious medal to his growing collection but also serves as a powerful testament to his resilience, determination and unwavering commitment to returning to the highest level of competition.

The road to Glasgow was anything but easy for the Kerala-born athlete. In 2024, Sreeshankar suffered a serious knee injury that required surgery and forced him to spend months away from the track. The setback threatened to derail a career that had been steadily progressing on the international stage. Rehabilitation was long and demanding, with uncertainty surrounding whether he would be able to regain the explosiveness and consistency required to compete among the world's best long jumpers.

Despite the challenges, Sreeshankar remained focused on his recovery. Through months of intensive rehabilitation, strength training and technical work, he gradually rebuilt his confidence and fitness. His return to competition was closely monitored, and the Glasgow Commonwealth Games became the perfect stage for him to demonstrate that he had regained both his physical condition and competitive edge.

Competing against a strong international field, Sreeshankar displayed remarkable composure throughout the event. His best jump of 8.09 metres proved enough to secure the silver medal, underlining the consistency and technical precision that have become hallmarks of his performances. While he narrowly missed out on the gold medal, his achievement was celebrated as one of the highlights of India's athletics campaign.

The medal carries added historical significance. Before Sreeshankar's achievement, no Indian male long jumper had managed to win more than one Commonwealth Games medal. By claiming silver in consecutive editions of the Games, he has established a new benchmark for Indian athletics and further strengthened the country's growing reputation in field events.

India's history in the Commonwealth Games long jump has been relatively modest. Prior to Sreeshankar, the country's only medallists in the event were Suresh Babu, who won the men's bronze medal in 1978, Anju Bobby George, who secured the women's bronze in 2002, and M. Prajusha, who claimed the women's silver medal in 2010. Sreeshankar has now joined and surpassed that distinguished list by becoming the first Indian to achieve back-to-back podium finishes in the discipline.

The silver medal also reinforces Sreeshankar's standing as one of India's leading medal prospects in international athletics. Over the past few years, he has consistently delivered strong performances in global competitions, establishing himself among the elite long jumpers in the world. His ability to return to medal-winning form after a lengthy injury layoff highlights not only his talent but also his mental strength and perseverance.

For Indian athletics, Sreeshankar's success represents more than just another medal. It reflects the growing depth of talent in the country's field events and provides inspiration for the next generation of athletes aiming to compete on the global stage. His journey from a devastating injury to making history at the Commonwealth Games stands as a powerful example of determination, resilience and the rewards of unwavering dedication.

With another Commonwealth Games silver now around his neck and his confidence fully restored, Sreeshankar has firmly announced that he is back among the world's best. As he looks ahead to future international competitions, including the Asian Games and World Championships, Indian fans will hope that this historic achievement is only the beginning of another successful chapter in his already impressive career.
