Cristiano Ronaldo endured a frustrating start to his sixth World Cup campaign as Portugal were held to a 1-1 draw by Congo on Wednesday. The 41-year-old forward, who joined Lionel Messi as the only players to feature in six World Cups, failed to score despite getting a couple of opportunities in the second half.
His misses stood out even more after stars such as Messi, Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland, Vinícius Júnior and Harry Kane all found the net in their opening matches. Following the draw, Ronaldo expressed optimism on social media, saying Portugal had not got the start they wanted but remained focused on the challenges ahead.

Portugal coach Roberto Martínez defended his decision to keep Ronaldo on the field, highlighting the veteran's experience, movement and ability to draw defenders. Congo midfielder Ngal'ayel Mukau credited his team's defence for successfully containing the Portuguese captain.
The match marked Ronaldo's 229th international appearance, extending his record as the most-capped men's player in football history. He also became the oldest outfield player to start a World Cup match. With Portugal set to face Uzbekistan and Colombia next, Martínez said the team would assess all players equally, regardless of age.
Widely expected to be Ronaldo's final World Cup, the tournament represents one last chance for the Portuguese legend to add to his remarkable international legacy.
