CAS to Decide Fate of Vinesh Phogat’s Olympic Silver Medal At 9 30 PM IST.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is set to deliver its verdict on the appeal filed by Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat regarding her disqualification from the Olympic finals. The decision is expected by 6 pm local time (9:30 pm IST) today, August 10, 2024.

The ad-hoc division of CAS, specifically established for resolving disputes during the Olympics, has extended the deadline for its decision to the end of the Paris Games.

The extension was announced following a thorough hearing on Vinesh’s appeal, which was lodged after she was disqualified for being 100 grams overweight on the day of her final match.

Vinesh Phogat’s appeal challenges her exclusion from the finals, where she was set to compete against Sarah Ann Hildebrandt of the USA. Instead of Vinesh, Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, who had lost to her in the semifinals, took her place in the final.

According to CAS, the decision to extend the time limit for the panel's ruling was made under Article 18 of the CAS Arbitration Rules. The ruling will be delivered by 6 pm Paris time, or 9:30 pm IST, ensuring it coincides with the conclusion of the Paris Olympics on Sunday.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has expressed optimism regarding the appeal, emphasising their hope for a positive resolution. The IOA believes that Vinesh’s application for a joint silver medal, based on her performance within the weight limits during her earlier bouts, might be favourably reviewed.

Representing Vinesh Phogat in the appeal are esteemed senior advocates Harish Salve and Vidushpat Singhania. The outcome of this decision will be keenly awaited as it will determine the final standing of Vinesh Phogat in the Olympic wrestling event.
