Egyptian fencer Nada Hafez has become a source of inspiration at the Paris 2024 Olympics, competing while seven months pregnant.

The 26-year-old athlete from Cairo shared her experience on Instagram, writing: “What appears to you as two players on the podium, were three! It was me, my competitor, and my yet-to-come-to-our-world baby!”

Hafez described the challenges she faced during her pregnancy while preparing for the competition. “My baby and I had our fair share of challenges, be it both physical and emotional.

“The rollercoaster of pregnancy is tough on its own, but having to fight to keep the balance of life and sports was nothing short of strenuous, however worth it.

“I’m writing this post to say that pride fills my being for securing my place in the round of 16!” added Hafez, who was competing in her third Olympics.

Despite being defeated 15-7 by South Korea’s Jeon Hayoung in the last round, Hafez’s determination and resilience have been widely praised.

A former gymnast with a medical degree, Hafez is a three-time Olympian and secured gold medals in both individual and team sabre events at the 2019 African Games.

In Monday’s competition, she achieved her best result across her three Olympic appearances, finishing at rank 16.

The nature of combat sports, known for its quick movements and the potential for falls or collisions, presented risks for both the mother and the unborn child.

Combat sports can expose pregnant athletes to physical hazards that might affect foetal development, making it essential for them to adopt rigorous safety measures.

It requires additional care.  A healthy diet and staying hydrated are crucial for ensuring the well-being of both.

Proper nutrition and hydration play a significant role in managing the physical demands of the sport and supporting foetal health.

Hafez's story not only highlights her extraordinary commitment to her sport but also raises awareness about the considerations and precautions necessary for athletes who compete during pregnancy.
