India team celebrates after receiving the trophy after defeating New Zealand during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 final cricket match between India and New Zealand at Narendra Modi Stadium, in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

The Indian men's cricket team produced a masterclass in batting, bowling, and fielding to crush New Zealand by 96 runs in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, clinching a historic third T20 World Cup title.

Sanju Samson led the charge with a scintillating 89 off 46 balls, while Abhishek Sharma (52 off 21) and Ishan Kishan (54 off 25) provided explosive support at the top. The trio combined for a record-setting 255 for 5, the highest total ever in a T20 World Cup final. India’s opening partnership of 98 runs in just 7.1 overs set the tone, capitalising on a tactical misstep by Black Caps skipper Mitchell Santner, who misread the pitch and mismanaged his bowling attack, leaving his team on the back foot.

Invited to bat, India’s top order went on a six-hitting spree. Samson’s innings featured a blend of power and precision, with eight towering sixes and 10 boundaries. Sharma’s 52-ball blitz, punctuated by sixes straight down the ground and over long-on, further set the scoreboard alight. Kishan kept the momentum rolling, ensuring India crossed the 200-run mark by the 15th over. Shivam Dube’s cameo of 26 not out off eight balls added crucial late runs, taking India to a formidable 255 for 5.

Chasing a near-impossible target, New Zealand’s innings never gained traction. Finn Allen (9) and Glenn Phillips (5) fell cheaply, leaving the visitors reeling. Tim Seifert’s 52 off 26 balls offered a fleeting glimmer of hope, but the innings collapsed under India’s relentless bowling. Jasprit Bumrah (4/15) and Axar Patel (3/27) dismantled the middle order, while James Neesham’s three wickets in a brief 16th-over surge did little to stem the damage. New Zealand was bowled out for 159 in 19 overs, sealing India’s emphatic 96-run victory.

The triumph marks India as the first men’s team to win consecutive T20 World Cups and the first to do so on home soil. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the team on X, calling the victory “a remarkable display of skill, determination and teamwork” and praising the squad for filling the nation with pride.

Under coach Gautam Gambhir, India has now lifted two T20 World Cups, showcasing the perfect blend of youth, experience, and explosive talent. Samson, Sharma, and Kishan’s record-setting partnership, combined with Bumrah’s precise death-over bowling and Axar’s acrobatic fielding, ensured New Zealand never recovered. Skipper Suryakumar Yadav marshalled his troops with calm authority, binding the team together and executing Gambhir’s strategy flawlessly.

The victory cements India’s dominance in T20 cricket. It highlights the team’s ability to deliver under pressure, with key individuals rising at the right moments. Samson’s innings, Sharma’s timely strike, and Kishan’s consistent support illustrated India’s batting depth, while Bumrah and Patel exemplified world-class bowling. The result sets a new benchmark in men’s T20 cricket, confirming India as the premier limited-overs side globally.

Brief Scores:

India: 255/5 in 20 overs (Sanju Samson 89, Ishan Kishan 54, Abhishek Sharma 52; James Neesham 3/46)

New Zealand: 159 all out in 19 overs (Tim Seifert 52; Jasprit Bumrah 4/15, Axar Patel 3/27)
