Former WFI Chief Brij Bhushan's close aide Sanjay Singh was named the President of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), and renowned wrestler Sakshi Malik proposed to leave the sport. The wrestler broke down in tears during a press conference.

 

Teary-eyed Malik, expressing disappointment on the appointment, stated, “We slept for 40 days on the roads and a lot of people from several parts of the country came to support us. If Brij Bhushan Singh's business partner and a close aide are elected as the president of WFI, I quit wrestling. We had demanded a woman be made the president, but that has not been fulfilled.”

 

Singh emerged victorious in the delayed elections on Thursday by 33 votes, defeating Commonwealth Games gold medal-winning wrestler Anita Sheoran. Singh, the close aide of Brij Bhushan managed to get 40 votes whereas Sheoran could only get 7 votes.

 

Being associated with the WFI for decades, Sanjay is also the vice president of the Uttar Pradesh Wrestling Association.

 

Speaking to PTI, Brij Bhushan commented on the matter, “11 months later, today is the election. In the election, Sanjay Singh, in a way, can be described as a representative of the old federation.

 

Sanjay Singh is sure to win the election, ensuring the formation of a new federation for the children. I urge them to create a conducive sports environment as soon as possible and compensate for any losses."
