The Indian men's and women's hockey teams will sport saffron jerseys instead of their iconic blue kits during next month's FIH Hockey World Cup in the Netherlands and Belgium, marking a significant visual shift for one of the country's most celebrated sporting identities. The decision has sparked widespread discussion among hockey fans and former players, with questions being raised over the rationale behind replacing the long-standing blue jersey.
The new kit was officially unveiled by Hockey India through its social media platforms, where the federation described the jersey as more than just a change in colour. According to the governing body, the redesigned uniform has been created to reflect India's heritage and values while giving the players a fresh identity on the international stage. Hockey India stated that the saffron colour represents courage, sacrifice, determination and victory, adding that the jersey is intended to "tell a story" and embody the pride of representing the nation.
However, the announcement quickly attracted attention after former India captain Viren Rasquinha publicly questioned the decision to move away from the traditional blue jersey, which has long been associated with Indian hockey and many other national sports teams. His remarks prompted Hockey India to issue a detailed clarification, explaining that the decision was not driven by symbolism alone but also by practical sporting considerations.
In its statement, Hockey India said that extensive discussions were held with players, coaches and support staff before finalising the new design. The federation revealed that the blue jerseys often blended with the blue synthetic turf that has become the standard playing surface at international hockey venues. This similarity, officials said, made it more difficult for players to quickly identify teammates during fast-paced passages of play.
"It was observed that the blue playing uniform tended to blend with the blue synthetic playing surface, which is now the standard colour of international hockey pitches. This visual similarity affected on-field clarity and visibility for the players," Hockey India said while defending the move.

Officials further explained that improving visual contrast can make a meaningful difference in a sport like hockey, where players must make split-second decisions while passing, receiving and intercepting the ball. A jersey colour that stands out more clearly against the playing surface is expected to improve on-field communication and overall gameplay.
The federation also maintained that the redesign was not an arbitrary decision. Feedback from players and technical experts was taken into account before the final jersey was approved. Hockey India believes the new saffron kit strikes a balance between functionality and national identity, allowing the teams to perform with greater confidence while carrying colours that symbolise India's spirit.
Despite the explanation, reactions among supporters remain mixed. While some fans have welcomed the fresh look and appreciated the emphasis on improved visibility, others feel that the traditional blue jersey has become an integral part of India's sporting identity and should have been retained.
