Vijender Singh, India's first Olympic medallist in boxing, who dived into politics in April 2019 by joining the Congress, switched allegiance to the BJP in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Singh unsuccessfully contested the 2019 Lok Sabha election from the South Delhi constituency on a Congress ticket. His name had been circulating for the past few days as the party's potential candidate from Mathura, where actor and incumbent MP Hema Malini has been fielded again by the BJP.

Singh hails from the Jat community, which holds political sway in numerous seats in Haryana, his home state, and in western Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.

After joining BJP,  Boxer Vijender Singh said, "I have joined BJP today for the development of the country and to serve the people. I want to help more and more people."

"This is gharwapsi for me. It is good to be back. Ever since the Modi government came to power, the kind of respect that sportsmen are getting across the globe is commendable," Singh said after joining the party.
