The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has summoned Sukhbir Badal, former president of Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal), to respond to allegations of neglecting Panthik sentiments during his leadership from 2007 to 2017. The summoning comes after a rebel faction of the party submitted a letter criticising Badal's leadership.

In response to the summons issued by the Akal Takht, Badal has announced that he will appear before the Akal Takht.

Badal's statement on social media X, stated, “As a devout and humble Sikh, I am devoted to Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj and the supreme shrine of Miri Piri, Sri Akal Takht Sahib. I will prostrate at the Supreme Shrine with immense reverence and humility, in accordance with the order of Sri Akal Takht Sahib.”

A meeting was held at the Akal Takht secretariat, attended by five appointed Jathedars, who called upon Badal to respond to the allegations in person, giving him the time of 15 days.

The Jathedars have also asked the SGPC to explain its actions regarding the controversial decision to pardon Gurmeet Ram Rahim, the chief of Dera Sauda Sirsa, in 2015.

The decision, which was later revoked, sparked widespread criticism and protests, and questions were raised about the use of 90 lakh rupees from the Gurdwaras treasury by the SGPC to defend the decision through advertising expenditure.

The Jathedars have sought an explanation from the SGPC on this matter.

The summoning of Sukhbir Badal is seen as a significant development, as it indicates that the SGPC and the Jathedars are taking steps to address the concerns and allegations raised by the rebel faction of the party.

The outcome of this development remains to be seen, but it is clear that the SGPC and the Jathedars are committed to upholding the principles and values of the Sikh community.
