National Conference (NC) vice president Omar Abdullah reaffirmed the party's commitment to retaining its electoral stronghold in Kashmir, asserting that the INDIA bloc's objective is to diminish BJP's electoral footprint rather than compromise its own constituency.

Abdullah's remarks follow speculations surrounding the INDIA bloc's purported agreement on seat-sharing for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Reports suggested Congress would contest in Jammu, Udhampur, and Ladakh, while NC would retain Srinagar and Baramulla, with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) securing the Anantnag seat.

Addressing the speculation, Abdullah underscored NC's firm stance, emphasizing the party's reluctance to relinquish any of the three seats it secured in the previous general elections. Refuting claims of surrendering seats, he clarified that discussions within the INDIA bloc revolved solely around reducing BJP's electoral presence.

While acknowledging discussions on seat-sharing, Abdullah highlighted NC's commitment to safeguarding its electoral interests. He revealed that certain proposals put forth by Congress during discussions did not align with NC's vision, prompting further deliberations within the party.

Anticipating a subsequent round of discussions, Abdullah announced his forthcoming visit to Delhi, signaling continued dialogue among INDIA bloc partners. He reiterated NC's selective engagement, focusing solely on seats currently held by BJP.

Expressing optimism regarding assembly elections, Abdullah underscored the urgency for democratic processes to resume in Jammu and Kashmir. He lamented the prolonged absence of assembly elections since 2014, emphasizing the importance of electoral governance in the region.

Echoing the sentiments of many, Abdullah highlighted the necessity for the Election Commission to take proactive steps during its impending visit to Jammu and Kashmir in March. He expressed hope for positive developments, aligning with the Supreme Court's directive for assembly polls in the Union Territory.

Abdullah's statements underscore NC's steadfast commitment to its electoral constituency and its proactive engagement within the INDIA bloc, signaling a nuanced approach to coalition dynamics amidst evolving political landscapes in Jammu and Kashmir.
