Senior National Conference (NC) leader and former minister, Ajay Kumar Sadhotra, said on Saturday that the party hoped Vice President and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah will reconsider his decision and participate in the upcoming assembly elections.

Omar Abdullah had recently announced his decision to not contest the assembly polls until the Centre restored the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir.

Reacting to this development, his father and party chief Farooq Abdullah said that it was a personal decision, although he would want Omar to contest elections.

As the elections are drawing close, party leaders have started making efforts to convince Omar to contest.

The polls are significant considering it’s the first since the abrogation of Article 370, and there is a vacuum that needs to be filled.

Whoever forms the next government will be at the centre of national politics.

Omar Abdullah posted on his X handle, “The Jammu and Kashmir assembly, in its first order of business after elections, will pass a resolution against the Centre’s decision to strip the region of its statehood and special status.”

Meanwhile, responding to media queries during a party event at Sher-e-Kashmir Bhawan, Sadhotra emphasised that decisions regarding the chief ministerial candidate and other nominees would be made by the Parliamentary Board. He highlighted that these decisions would reflect the democratic spirit of inclusivity.

The former minister reiterated that decisions on pre-poll alliances and candidatures of both Dr Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah would be determined by the Parliamentary Board.

“We urge Omar Abdullah to respect the aspirations of NC workers and the millions of people of J&K by reconsidering his decision.

“His participation is not just a personal choice but a reflection of the collective will of the party, which has a history of service and sacrifice for the people,” the NC leaders stated in a statsement after the party event.

Reposing faith in the leadership of Dr Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah the party said the Abdullahs would help Jammu and Kashmir regain their statehood and rights. “Together, we will script a new saga of peace, progress, development, and prosperity,” the statement added.
