Bharatiya Janata Party's Kiran Choudhry who resigned from Haryana Assembly yesterday, filed her nomination for the Rajya Sabha by-poll as BJP candidate on Wednesday.

 

She submitted her nomination papers in the presence of Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and several BJP MLAs in the Legislative Assembly complex.

 

Kiran switched to BJP nearly two months ago. Given the BJP's numbers in the assembly, the 'lotus' is set to register its' win.

 

The bypoll for the lone Rajya Sabha seat in Haryana was necessitated after Congress leader Deepender Singh Hooda was elected to the Lok Sabha from Rohtak.

 

Elections for the 12 vacant Rajya Sabha seats across nine states are scheduled for September 3, with Wednesday being the deadline for nominations. The scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on August 22 while candidates can withdraw their nominations until August 27.

 

In Haryana, the political landscape is as follows - BJP holds 41 seats in the 90-member assembly, Congress 28, and JJP 10. Five Independents, one INLD member, and one Haryana Lokhit Party (HLP) member make up the remainder, with four seats vacant.

 

BJP enjoys support from Independent MLA Nayan Pal Rawat and HLP MLA Gopal Kanda, while Congress is backed by three Independents.

 

Meanwhile, Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda has already announced that his party will not field a candidate for the Rajya Sabha by-poll.
