With Chief Minister, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s wife, Kamlesh Thakur, who won the Assembly by-poll from Dehra, taking oath as MLA today, it is for the first time in the history of Himachal Pradesh that any husband-wife would be members of the same House.

Two other MLAs, who won the by-polls held on July 10, Hardeep Bawa of Congress from Nalagarh in Solan district and Ashish Sharma of BJP from Hamirpur in Hamirpur district also took the oath of office today.

Previously from 2017 to 2021, the father and son duo- former six-time CM, Virbhadra Singh and his son, Vikramaditya Singh (who is now cabinet minister in the Sukhu government) were members of the same House.

With this number of women MLAs in the state Assembly has risen to three, out of which one Reena Kashyap of BJP represents Pachad in the Sirmaur district. Anuradha Rana took oath as MLA last month after she won the by-poll from the tribal Lahaul & Spiti constituency.

After the 2022 Assembly polls, there has been a shuffle of members in the state Assembly following a revolt in the ruling Congress, which led to the disqualification of six MLAs, and then the resignation by three Independent MLAs since February 2024.

This had led to by-polls in nine Assembly constituencies, with all these members, who were disqualified or resigned themselves, having contested on BJP ticket. Finally, six of them lost.

The Congress won six seats and the BJP three. Four Congress rebels and two Independents, who fought on BJP ticket had lost the by-polls. This brought the Congress party to 40 seats again, which it won in 2022. However, the BJP rose from 25 to 28. There are no Independents in the state Assembly now.
