Tensions across the Middle East escalated sharply on Sunday as the United States and Iran exchanged fresh military strikes, deepening fears of a broader regional conflict following the deaths of American service members in Jordan earlier this week.
The US military carried out its eighth consecutive night of airstrikes against targets in Iran, describing the operation as a direct response to an Iranian attack that killed American troops stationed in Jordan. According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the strikes were aimed at degrading the operational capabilities of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and deterring further attacks on US personnel and regional allies.
In a statement, CENTCOM said the latest wave of strikes was intended to "swiftly punish Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces who launched attacks against American service members in Jordan." The US military released footage showing fighter aircraft and Tomahawk cruise missiles striking several strategic targets across Iran, including coastal surveillance facilities, air defence installations, missile storage sites, and the under-construction Darkhovin nuclear power plant.
Iran strongly condemned the attacks, particularly the strike on the nuclear facility. The Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran described the attack as "an aggressive and brutal act contrary to international law," accusing Washington of targeting civilian nuclear infrastructure and further inflaming regional instability.
Tehran responded within hours with a series of retaliatory attacks targeting US military assets in the Gulf. The Iranian military claimed responsibility for drone strikes on two American bases in Kuwait. According to Iranian officials, the attacks hit an ammunition storage depot at Camp Udairi and damaged Patriot air defence radar systems at Ali Al Salem Air Base.
Kuwaiti authorities have not released detailed information on the extent of the damage, but the country's Ministry of Electricity confirmed that one of Kuwait's major power generation and desalination facilities came under attack for the second consecutive day. The strike reportedly sparked a fire at the facility, raising concerns over essential services.
As nearly 90 percent of Kuwait's drinking water is supplied through desalination plants, officials warned that prolonged disruptions could have serious consequences for water security and daily life.
The violence also spread to neighbouring countries. Bahrain's military announced that it had intercepted and destroyed several Iranian aerial threats before they reached their intended targets. The Bahraini government accused Tehran of attempting to strike civilian infrastructure and described the attacks as "treacherous," reaffirming its commitment to protecting the country's security.
Meanwhile, air raid sirens sounded across parts of Jordan after an Iranian missile was detected heading toward the Red Sea port city of Aqaba. Jordanian and Israeli air defence systems successfully intercepted the missile before it reached its destination. The incident came shortly after the US Embassy in Amman issued a security advisory warning of a "specific and credible threat" to Aqaba's port and airport, prompting heightened security measures across the region.

The rapidly deteriorating security situation has also prompted fresh military preparations by Israel. An Israeli military official said the country is preparing to receive additional US aerial refuelling aircraft as Washington adjusts its military posture in the Middle East. According to the official, the reinforcement of tanker aircraft stationed in Israel would expand operational capabilities and support any future regional missions if required.
Although Israel has not directly participated in the latest US strikes against Iran, it has provided logistical support by hosting American refuelling aircraft. Analysts view the deployment of additional assets as a signal that both countries are preparing for the possibility of a prolonged confrontation should hostilities continue to escalate.
The current cycle of retaliation was triggered by Friday's Iranian missile and drone attack on a US military base in Jordan. CENTCOM confirmed that two American service members were killed while defending the installation against incoming ballistic missiles and drones. A third service member remains missing, while four others sustained injuries requiring hospital treatment.
The latest casualties have pushed the confirmed US military death toll since the conflict began to 16, with more than 430 personnel reported wounded in attacks across the region. The growing number of casualties has intensified pressure on Washington to respond decisively while also increasing international concern that the conflict could expand beyond its current scope.
As military operations continue and diplomatic efforts remain limited, governments across the Middle East and the international community are closely monitoring developments, amid mounting fears that the exchange of strikes between the United States and Iran could evolve into a wider regional war with far-reaching humanitarian and geopolitical consequences.
