US advisory on J&K proves Modi govt changed nothing: Omar

“So much for ‘naya J&K.’ For all the talk of normalcy, peace, tourism & the G-20 tamasha in Srinagar, J&K continues to be the target of US State Department travel advisories. The Modi government has been able to change nothing,” Abdullah posted on X.

National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah has criticised the Modi government's efforts, claiming they have failed to alter negative travel advisories from the US State Department, which continue to target Jammu and Kashmir.

“So much for ‘naya J&K.’ For all the talk of normalcy, peace, tourism & the G-20 tamasha in Srinagar, J&K continues to be the target of US State Department travel advisories. The Modi government has been able to change nothing,” Abdullah posted on X.

The US State Department's advisory urges American citizens to avoid travelling to Manipur, Jammu and Kashmir, the India-Pakistan border, and parts of central and eastern India where Naxalite activities are prevalent.

While India is placed at Level 2 overall, several regions, including Jammu and Kashmir, are at Level 4 due to concerns about terrorism and civil unrest.

The advisory specifically states, “Do not travel to: The union territory of Jammu and Kashmir (except the eastern Ladakh region and its capital, Leh) due to terrorism and civil unrest; within 10 km of the India-Pakistan border due to the potential for armed conflict; portions of Central and East India due to terrorism; and Manipur due to violence and crime.”

Abdullah's comments reflect a broader concern about the lingering perception of instability in Jammu and Kashmir, despite the Modi government's efforts to promote peace and tourism in the region.

Events such as the G-20 summit in Srinagar have been part of these efforts, showcasing the government's commitment to transforming the region.

However, the travel advisories indicate that challenges still remain. The Modi government has undertaken numerous initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, enhancing security, and fostering economic growth.

These efforts are crucial for creating a more stable and welcoming environment for both residents and visitors.
