Two personal security officers (PSOs) of celebrated singer Zubeen Garg, Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishya, were arrested on Friday in connection with his death in Singapore last month, officials confirmed. With this, the total number of individuals detained in the case has risen to seven.
Bora and Baishya, deputed by the government as part of Garg’s security detail, were suspended by Assam Police on Tuesday after multiple rounds of questioning. Investigators have expressed suspicion over financial transactions running into several lakhs of rupees processed through their bank accounts, which are now under scrutiny.
Earlier arrests in the case included Shyamkanu Mahanta, organiser of the North East India Festival; Sandipan Garg, the singer’s cousin; Siddhartha Sharma, Garg’s manager; musician Shekharjyoti Goswami; and singer Amritprava Mahanta. Police are investigating the roles of each individual in the events leading up to Garg’s death, including travel arrangements, festival coordination, and security protocols.

Authorities confirmed that the investigation is focused not only on the circumstances of Garg’s drowning on September 19 but also on any possible financial irregularities or lapses in safety during the festival. Officials are examining whether there were any lapses in security measures or negligence by those responsible for Garg’s welfare while he was abroad.
Zubeen Garg, 50, had travelled to Singapore to perform at the North East India Festival, an annual event showcasing talent from Assam and the northeastern states. His sudden death while swimming sent shockwaves across the music fraternity and fans.
Assam Police said additional interrogations are underway and that further arrests cannot be ruled out as the probe continues. “We are examining all aspects, including the actions of the PSOs and other personnel linked to the singer’s itinerary,” a senior officer said.
